Lime Technology Products Show Rapid Soil pH Turnaround
Soil acidity continues to quietly erode productivity across the Wheatbelt, eating away at yield potential, fertiliser efficiency, and long-term soil health. For many growers, the challenge isn’t just recognising acidity—it’s choosing a lime product that actually works fast enough to make a difference within a season.
A recent field trial near Dumbleyung has offered a clear answer. Conducted under commercial conditions on sandy and gravelly soils, the trial showed that Hi-Cal—a high-reactivity lime from Optima Lime—achieved a rapid lift in soil pH within just five months of application.
Fast results across all rates
The Dumbleyung trial tested application rates from 0 to 2 tonnes per hectare, with samples taken before application and again five months later. The results were striking: Hi-Cal increased Top Soil pH across all rates—a significant change in such a short timeframe. Even the lowest rate, 0.5 tonnes per hectare, produced a strong response, confirming the product’s high reactivity.

The subsoil results told an equally important story. While the untreated plots showed a drop in pH—becoming more acidic over time—the limed treatments experienced less acid drift and better profile balance. This means Hi-Cal not only corrected surface acidity but also began stabilising conditions deeper in the root zone.
Calcium driving the change
A major driver behind this rapid change was Hi-Cal’s high calcium availability. Across the trial, calcium levels rose by 136 % in the top 10 cm of soil and by 44 % at 20–30 cm depth. The strong correlation between calcium and pH improvement demonstrates the product’s efficient carbonate chemistry and its ability to move downward through the profile.
This downward movement is particularly valuable in Western Australia’s lighter soils, where nutrient leaching and moisture loss can leave subsoils depleted. Improved calcium levels promote better root exploration, nutrient uptake, and structural stability—giving crops more access to moisture and fertiliser
Performance across soil types
The Dumbleyung site included a mix of sandy, loamy, and gravelly soils typical of the region. While sandy soils showed the fastest pH lift, heavier-textured clays responded more gradually . Areas with higher gravel content also responded, though slightly less intensely due to lower moisture and reactive surface area.
This consistency across soil types highlights Hi-Cal’s versatility. Its ultra-fine particle size and high neutralising value mean it reacts quickly in a wide range of paddock conditions. For growers managing mixed soil types, it offers a practical way to tackle acidity efficiently without needing different lime sources or resorting to expensive mechanical incorporation
Implications for growers
The key takeaway from Dumbleyung is that meaningful soil correction doesn’t have to take years. Within a single season, measurable changes were achieved—even at conservative application rates. That’s good news for growers aiming to protect yield potential and improve fertiliser performance without waiting multiple seasons for results.
For many WA farms, particularly in regions with low-buffering sandy soils, the trial reinforces the importance of choosing lime based on quality, not just price or proximity. Particle size, purity, and reactivity determine how fast a product can lift pH—and ultimately, how quickly the investment starts paying off.
Optima Lime’s findings suggest that even small, well-timed applications can initiate soil recovery and reduce the long-term cost of acidity management. For gravelly or low-CEC soils, split or biennial top-ups may help maintain the balance achieved in the first season.
Building healthier soils for the future
Soil acidity has long been recognised as one of the most widespread constraints in WA’s broadacre systems. The Dumbleyung trial shows how a high-reactivity lime can deliver both speed and depth of correction—boosting topsoil pH, improving calcium balance, and setting the foundation for healthier, more productive soils.
For Western Australian growers facing ongoing acidification, the message is simple: the right lime, applied at the right time, works fast. And with results like these just five months after spreading, Hi-Cal is proving that rapid recovery isn’t just possible—it’s happening in paddocks in Western Australia.
